Leadership is often tested in high-pressure environments where adaptability, resilience, and vision are key. Few events in the world encapsulate these qualities as profoundly as the MahaKumbh Mela—the world’s largest spiritual gathering. Managing an event of this magnitude requires not only logistical expertise but also deep cultural and spiritual insight. In this exclusive interview, we speak with Mr. Perdeep Kumar, the Regional Director of Strategic Partnerships at Harvard Business School Publishing. He is a Marshall Goldsmith Certified Coach and a Certified LifeCoach (ICF ACTP Accreditation). With a keen interest in leadership and mindfulness, Perdeep spends his time reflecting on leadership lessons from ancient Asian literature. He also conducts weekly Bhagavad Gita, Shrimad Bhagavatam, Bhakti Yoga, and Mindfulness Classes. Additionally, he dedicates five days annually to pro bono coaching for social entrepreneurs, focusing on Leadership, Strategic Thinking, Business Model Canvas, Innovation, and Emotional Intelligence. Mr.Perdeep’s recent journey to the MahaKumbh Mela in Prayagraj provided him with profound leadership insights rooted in resilience, humility, and perspective. Through this conversation, he shares invaluable lessons that merge ancient wisdom with modern leadership principles. Q1: You recently attended the MahaKumbh Mela at Prayagraj. What inspired you to embark on this journey? Perdeep Kumar: The MahaKumbh Mela is the world’s largest spiritual gathering, and I was intrigued by its sheer scale, cultural depth, and logistical brilliance. As someone deeply interested in leadership and resilience, I wanted to experience firsthand how such an enormous event is managed while also seeking personal growth from this sacred pilgrimage. In Holy Dhams like Prayagraj, there is a layer of maya covering these Dhams. The mercy and benevolence of the Dham is revealed when we go beyond this layer of maya (the seeming dirt and inconvenience) to appreciate the Divine. Q2: You mentioned that acknowledging life’s challenges can lead to meaningful experiences. How did this mindset help you during the MahaKumbh? Perdeep Kumar: Accepting that life is inherently tough allows us to move past frustration and approach challenges with clarity. At the MahaKumbh, the massive crowds, long walking distances, and overwhelming logistics could have been exhausting. However, preparing mentally for these difficulties allowed me to immerse myself fully in the experience and appreciate its spiritual and leadership lessons. Q3: You highlighted ‘Humility in Service’ as a key leadership lesson. Could you elaborate on this? Perdeep Kumar: At ISKCON and Parmarth Niketan camps, volunteers worked tirelessly with pure dedication, serving thousands of pilgrims daily. This was a remarkable example of servant leadership—putting others first and leading with empathy. Leaders who adopt this mindset foster deep trust, loyalty, and shared commitment in their teams. Q4: The MahaKumbh Mela is often described as a ‘pop-up city.’ What leadership insights can be drawn from its organization? Perdeep Kumar: The event covers 10,000 acres, hosts millions of people, and requires temporary infrastructure, including 160,000 tents, 400 km of roads, 30 pontoon bridges, and 150,000 toilets. This level of urban planning demands foresight, adaptability, and resource optimization. The biggest takeaway is embracing impermanence—once the event concludes, everything is dismantled, reinforcing detachment from outcomes, as taught in the Bhagavad Gita. Leaders must focus on excellence in execution while understanding that change is inevitable. Q5: How does the MahaKumbh reflect the importance of perspective in leadership? Perdeep Kumar: In an event of this magnitude, small inconveniences—like high boat ride prices—can seem frustrating. However, understanding the larger economic dynamics and the once-in-a-lifetime nature of the experience shifts our perspective. Leaders who zoom out and align their teams with a bigger mission help them navigate short-term obstacles with resilience. Q6: What role does resilience play in managing large-scale events like the MahaKumbh? Perdeep Kumar: The MahaKumbh operates in unpredictable conditions—dense crowds, extreme weather, and dynamic routes—yet the event flows smoothly due to its optimistic, solution-oriented approach. Similarly, in leadership, resilience and a positive mindset are crucial for overcoming challenges without losing focus or motivation. Q7: Inclusivity is another major theme you observed. How can leaders foster cultural synergy in organizations? Perdeep Kumar: The MahaKumbh unites people from different languages, regions, and backgrounds under a common spiritual purpose. This proves that fostering an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued leads to stronger community bonds. Leaders who encourage mutual respect and cultural harmony create workplaces where innovation and collaboration thrive. Q9: You mentioned that the true essence of the MahaKumbh lies in its intangible aspects. Can you expand on that? Perdeep Kumar: While the logistics are impressive, the MahaKumbh’s true power lies in faith, shared devotion, and collective purpose. In leadership, this translates to building culture, purpose, and values that drive long-term success beyond immediate goals or profits. Q10: Lastly, what personal leadership insight did you gain from this experience? Perdeep Kumar: The MahaKumbh reaffirmed that toughness, once accepted, can lead to extraordinary growth. Setting realistic expectations—knowing challenges will arise and that adaptability is key—allows us to face difficulties with a steady heart. In that acceptance, we find transcendence, turning overwhelming situations into enriching experiences. The MahaKumbh Mela is more than a spiritual gathering—it is a living example of leadership in action. From resilience and adaptability to service and inclusivity, the event mirrors the challenges and triumphs that leaders face daily. Perdeep Kumar’s insights remind us that true leadership is about embracing difficulties, fostering a shared purpose, and constantly learning from experiences. In a world that demands both vision and execution, the MahaKumbh offers timeless lessons that can guide leaders in every sphere of life. Toughness, when accepted, transforms into an opportunity for extraordinary growth. That is the ultimate leadership takeaway from the MahaKumbh Mela.
